Four children and two adults were shot and killed Wednesday when gunfire erupted in a home outside Houston, law enforcement officials said.
The children ranged in age from 4 to 15, Harris County Constable Ron Hickman told the Los Angeles Times.
The suspect surrendered to authorities after a standoff that lasted more than three hours while he sat in a car at the edge of a cul-de-sac. He is believed to be the adoption father of one, possibly two of the children and uncle to the rest, Hickman told The Times.
"We still don't know all the specifics," he said.
Authorities say they found three children and two adults shot to death inside the home at 711 Leaflet Lane in Spring, Texas, sometime after 6 p.m. local time, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
A fourth child who was wounded died at a hospital, according to a sheriff's office news release.
A seventh victim, identified as an adult, remained in critical condition, the release said.
During the standoff, the suspect held a gun to his head, which Hickman said is believed to be the murder weapon.
It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting, which happened in the town of 55,000 about 20 miles from downtown Houston.
The attack came just days after four people were wounded, one critically, in a shooting at the Caribbean Festival early Saturday in Houston, police said.
