Dodgers barraged by hits in 14-5 loss to Tigers

KEY MOMENT: The Dodgers roughed up Justin Verlander for five runs in the first inning, and the home fans booed him off the mound. But Verlander ended up the winning pitcher, as the Tigers tied the score against Hyun-Jin Ryu in the second inning, when they got eight hits, and chased the left-hander in the third. The Dodgers gave up more runs to the Tigers in one game than they had in their previous four games to the Colorado Rockies, at Coors Field, no less.

AT THE PLATE: Matt Kemp had three singles, and Juan Uribe had a single and a home run. The Dodgers were four for seven against Verlander in the first inning, one for 16 afterward.

ON THE MOUND: Ryu tied a Los Angeles Dodgers record by giving up eight hits in an inning, previously accomplished by Johnny Podres (1963), Tommy John (1978) and Ismael Valdes (1995). Ryu tied his season high by giving up 10 hits. He gave up seven runs in 21/3 innings, and perhaps his pitching performance was not the Dodgers' worst. Jamey Wright got two outs in the third inning, but he faced six batters in the fourth, retired none, and gave up four runs, one on a bases-loaded walk.

ROSTER NEWS: Manager Don Mattingly said outfielder Carl Crawford had completed his minor league rehabilitation assignment and would fly to Los Angeles on Wednesday. The Dodgers could activate him as soon as Thursday, but they have made no commitment to play him. Kemp is batting .289 since becoming the everyday left fielder May 28, when Crawford went on the disabled list. … The Dodgers put pitcher Josh Beckett on the disabled list (left hip impingement) and recalled right-handed reliever Pedro Baez from triple-A Albuquerque.

STAR TURN: By the time Dee Gordon looked at his phone Sunday, after he was selected to the National League All-Star team, he said he had about 140 congratulatory texts. One came from one of his father Tom's old Philadelphia Phillies teammates, shortstop Jimmy Rollins. "I was around him a lot," Dee Gordon said. Dee was 17 when his father first played with Rollins in 2006, so this might make Rollins feel old. "Don't tell him that," Dee said, smiling.

UP NEXT: Zack Greinke (11-4, 2.66 ERA) faces the Tigers' Max Scherzer (10-3, 3.47) on Wednesday at 10 a.m. PDT at Comerica Park. TV: SportsNet LA. Radio: 570, 1020.
