AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers scored eight runs in the first inning against Texas at the Alamodome, where the right-field foul pole was 275 feet from home plate. Each of the Dodgers' starting outfielders — Yasiel Puig, Joc Pederson and Matt Carson — each homered in the first inning, and infielders Enrique Hernandez and Justin Turner homered later in the game. Pederson had three hits and is batting .471. Outfielder Andre Ethier had two of the Dodgers' four hits against Oakland; Ethier has four hits in his last five at-bats and is hitting .290. Outfielder Chris Heisey went 0 for 3 and is hitting .080.
ON THE MOUND: Clayton Kershaw pitched five innings against the A's in Mesa, Ariz., and gave up three hits — an infield single, a single flared into the outfield, and a soft line drive that hit him on the jaw. He stayed in the game. Also, in his first at-bat of the spring, he singled off Oakland ace Sonny Gray. Left-handed reliever Adam Liberatore pitched a scoreless inning and has yet to give up a run this spring, with no walks and six strikeouts in six innings. Erik Bedard and Joe Wieland, candidates to make spot starts in place of the injured Hyun-Jin Ryu, each pitched against Texas; Bedard gave up three hits in one inning and Wieland gave up three hits in three innings, with four strikeouts.
EXTRA BASES: The Dodgers gave left-hander David Huff the day off after his wife, Lisa, gave birth to a son named Ethan on Thursday. Huff and right-hander Chad Gaudin are each trying to win a job as a long reliever. Gaudin is set to start Saturday, with Zack Greinke taking his turn for the Dodgers' split squad in San Antonio. Huff is scheduled to start Sunday, in place of Ryu.
