Ducks' Frederik Andersen may sit out after head injury in Sunday's game

The head injury that knocked Ducks goaltender Frederik Andersen from Sunday's loss at Tampa Bay kept him sidelined through Monday's practice.

The goal crossbar struck the back of Andersen's head in the third period after Tampa Bay forward Ondrej Palat fell on defenseman Hampus Lindholm, whose stick lodged at the right post and caused the goal to tip.

Andersen is considered game-to-game, Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said, and will be re-evaluated Tuesday morning before Anaheim visits the Florida Panthers.

Following the morning assessment, Andersen could play, sit in favor of backup Ilya Bryzgalov, or John Gibson could be summoned from the minors, Boudreau said.

"He wasn't feeling as good as we'd like him to feel, so it was better to hold him out than to have him practice," Boudreau said Monday at the Panthers' practice facility. "We're hoping he feels better, and we'll take it from there.

"If he comes in tomorrow and says, 'I'm still not feeling that good,' we'll probably have to call somebody up and make a decision on who starts," Boudreau said.

Before Monday's NHL action, Andersen was tied for second place with Montreal's Carey Price for most wins at 29.

Also banged up

Lindholm sat out practice with a leg injury suffered in the third period Sunday when he fell and someone landed on him, but the defenseman expects to play Tuesday in Florida.

"He was just testing his leg out and said another day would be better," Boudreau said. "He plays so much, I don't think the rest will hurt him whatsoever."

Lindholm, 20, said he received some treatment and did some light skating Monday.

What's up with Lovejoy?

Boudreau has made defenseman Ben Lovejoy a healthy scratch in two of the Ducks' last three games while playing defenseman Eric Brewer in three of four.

Why?

"Because we've got seven defensemen who we think can play," Boudreau said. "Ben sat out two games. He's not going to sit out all the time. We've talked to him, he knows we really like him, but you've got to sit somebody out, right?"

The move is surprising, considering Lovejoy and Cam Fowler form the Ducks' top defensive pair and that Brewer was acquired in response to illness and injury. At Monday's practice, Fowler skated with Lindholm's usual partner, Francois Beauchemin.

Brewer was minus-two with two giveaways in 22 shifts Sunday against his former team.

"He's had good moments and bad moments," Boudreau said of Brewer.

While the Ducks were erroneously rumored last week to be in pursuit of Buffalo defenseman Tyler Myers, they would seek such a player if the situation presents itself before the March 2 trade deadline.

Lovejoy didn't want to engage in that speculation, working to remain the good soldier.

"I am 100% on board with this team. I think this team can win a Stanley Cup, and I want to be part of it," he said.

"It's the worst [missing a game like Sunday's 5-3 loss]. I feel I can help this team win. We had a tough game … and that's almost even harder to not be a part of. It's not my decision."
