Tyler Dorsey of Pasadena Maranatha is so hot these days that he should start blowing his fingers like a gunslinger after he makes shot after shot.
He turned in another dazzling performance on Tuesday night, scoring 42 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to help Maranatha hand a rare Olympic League defeat on Village Christian, 69-64, in Pasadena.
"He put us on his back," Coach Tim Tucker said. "He willed us to win."
Maranatha (6-7, 1-0), which has been playing one tough team after another while waiting for 6-foot-10 Trevor Stanback to be cleared because of an undisclosed medical issue, was down by 10 points at halftime and not playing very well. Village Christian (15-5, 0-1) was smartly getting the ball inside to 6-10 Bennie Boatwright, who finished with 27 points.
But Dorsey took charge in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 points, including three threes. And Village Christian started launching threes and went cold. It was the Crusaders' first league loss since the 2010-11 season.
"This is a big win against a great team," Tucker said.
Dorsey is on a scoring spree. He had 40 points against Diamond Ranch, 41 against Long Beach Millikan, 36 against Cathedral, 44 against Bell-Jeff and add 42 against the Crusaders. He's averaging 31.3 points. And he still hasn't made a college choice after being previously committed to Arizona.
"I came in with a new mindset in the 2015 year," Dorsey said.
The big question is when Stanback will become available. He hasn't practiced since the week before the season began when he was shut down. "I should play soon," Stanback said after Tuesday's game.
Dorsey and Stanback together will make Maranatha one very tough team to beat.
