Boys' basketball: Western League teams are off to a fast start

City Section teams from the Western League are looking strong early in the season.

On Monday night, Fairfax opened play in the El Segundo tournament with a 103-44 win over Westminster. Donald Gipson scored 21 points, Babacar Thiombane had 20 points and Lindsey Drew added 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Tyler Burch scored 29 points for Westminster.

Palisades improved to 2-0 with a 64-46 win over Crossroads. Joseph Robinson scored 32 points. University is 5-0 after a 72-45 win over Salesian. Cushan Allen had 18 points and Dwight Murray 17. Westchester (3-2) defeated King-Drew, 89-59.

In the Mission Viejo tournament, Sonora was beaten at the buzzer by La Costa Canyon, 70-68, despite 31 points from Josh Rodriguez. Anaheim Canyon defeated Temecula Valley, 58-48.

In the El Segundo tournament, Chris Terry scored 25 points in El Camino Real's 80-32 win over El Segundo. Loyola opened with an 80-59 win over Lakewood. Max Hazzard scored 29 points, Stone Gettings 15 and Henry Welsh had 12 rebounds.

Crespi defeated Crenshaw, 56-35. Mitchell Mykhaylov had 16 points and 16 rebounds. Freshman Brandon Williams scored 15 points.

In the Maranatha tournament, Chino Hills avoided a huge upset, holding off Highland, 65-63. Lonzo Ball had the winning basket and finished with 21 points and 18 rebounds. LiAngelo Ball added 19 points. Dominic Gully led Highland with 24 points. Westlake defeated Canyon Springs, 81-63. Michael Hayon and Isaiah Brooks each scored 19 points. Dorsey defeated Pasadena, 71-55, with Jonathan Staggers scoring 18 points. Price defeated St. Francis, 56-35.

Wednesday's quarterfinals will be Chino Hills vs. Dorsey at 8 p.m. and Price vs. Westlake at 6:30 p.m.

In the St. Monica tournament, Chaminade defeated Verbum Dei, 74-32. Jordan Ogundiran and Dylan Cuenca each had 16 points. Harvard-Westlake, in the final season for Coach Greg Hilliard, opened with a 61-31 win over Culver City. Ali Iken scored 19 points and Alex Copeland 18.

In the Westchester tournament, Stephen Thompson Jr. scored 31 points in Bishop Montgomery's 78-29 win over Washington. San Gabriel Academy defeated Venice, 68-46. Hart defeated Morningside, 48-40.

In the Sierra Vista tournament, Damien defeated Duarte, 81-26. Jeremy Hemsley scored 18 points. Micah Robinson added 15 points.

In the San Dimas tournament, Rancho Cucamonga received 21 points from Kyle Lounsbury in a 74-56 win over Charter Oak.

Servite opened with a 75-38 win over St. Paul. Trevor Teinen poured in 34 points. Freshman Brendan Harrick had 14 points.

Buckley opened with a 92-67 win over Ribet. Austin Butler had 17 points and 15 rebounds. Freshmen Kihei Clark and Mike Meadows each had 20 points.

In the Ocean View tournament, Adrian Gutierrez scored 29 points in Verdugo Hills' 58-56 win over Long Beach Wilson.

In the Burbank tournament, Bennie Boatwright scored 25 points to lead Village Christian past Saugus, 73-47. Zach Phipps had 19 points for Saugus.
