Royals beat Angels again in 11 innings to take 2-0 series lead

Eric Hosmer's two-run home run in the 11th inning lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 win over the Angels on Friday night and a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five American League division series.

It was the second consecutive night at Angel Stadium that the Royals won with the help of a home run in the 11th inning. Kansas City edged the Angels, 3-2, in the ALDS opener Thursday night on Mike Moustakas' 11th-inning homer off Angels reliever Fernando Salas.

This time it was Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen who served up the homer. After Lorenzo Cain legged out an infield single, Hosmer drilled a Jepsen pitch into the right-field corner to give Kansas City a 3-1 lead. The Royals added one more run later in the inning on Salvador Perez's run-scoring single.

Friday's game was a duel for six innings between two standout rookie starting pitchers: the Angels' Matt Shoemaker and the Royals' Yordano Ventura.

The Angels scored their run in the sixth inning when Kole Calhoun singled off Ventura, moved to second base on Mike Trout's walk and scored when Albert Pujols singled to right field. It was Pujols' first hit of the postseason.

The Royals, who became the first team to open postseason play with three consecutive extra-inning games, got on the scoreboard in the second inning. Hosmer singled into the right-field corner and Calhoun, the Angels' right fielder, bobbled the ball for an error that allowed Hosmer to reach second base. Alex Gordon singled to score Hosmer.

That was the only run, which was unearned, that Shoemaker gave up in six innings. Shoemaker surrendered five hits, struck out six and walked none.

Ventura, often firing fastballs exceeding 100 mph, went seven innings and gave up one run on five hits.

The Angels squandered a possible scoring opportunity in the eighth inning. After Royals reliever Wade Davis took over for Ventura, C.J. Cron hit Davis' first pitch down the left-field line for a double. Cron then was lifted for pinch-runner Collin Cowgill.

Chris Iannetta flied out to center field and Cowgill tagged in hopes of reaching third base. But Royals center fielder Jarrod Dyson, who had just entered the game, threw Cowgill out at third.

Game 3 is Sunday at 4:30 p.m. PDT at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
