KEY MOMENTS: With two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Yasiel Puig worked the count full. Puig took a borderline 3-2 pitch that was called a strike by home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn, ending the inning with the Dodgers still trailing, 5-2. With his hands on his hips, Puig stared at Reyburn until first base coach Davey Lopes instructed him to return to the dugout. Earlier in the inning, the Dodgers scored two runs and nearly scored a third, when Juan Uribe singled to center field with Justin Turner on second base. Shortstop Josh Rutledge's throw beat Turner to the plate and Turner was called out, but officials reviewed the play because catcher Michael McKenry appeared to be blocking the plate. The original call stood.
AT THE PLATE: Something positive for the Dodgers came out of this lopsided defeat, as Puig hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning. The home run was Puig's first since July 31 and ended a 37-game homerless streak. "It's been a long time, not just hitting a home run, but hitting the ball solidly," Puig said. Turner was three for four with two doubles.
ON THE MOUND: Dan Haren was charged with five runs and four hits in five innings. "I gave up five baserunners and all five scored, so it's kind of worst-case scenario, I guess," he said. The Dodgers used five relievers: Scott Elbert, Brandon League, Daniel Coulombe, Jamey Wright and Yimi Garcia.
ROSTER MOVE: The Dodgers added an arm to their bullpen by promoting Coulombe from double-A Chattanooga. Coulombe, 24, is in the major leagues for the first time. He posted a 2.89 earned-run average in 49 relief appearances with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga and Chattanooga.
EXTRA BASES: The Dodgers will start selling playoff tickets on Friday at 10 a.m. on their website, dodgers.com. … Farm director De Jon Watson will have a second interview with the Arizona Diamondbacks to be their general manager, according to CBSSports.com. … Clayton Kershaw is the Dodgers' nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes the player who best represents the game on and off the field. Kershaw won it in 2012.
UP NEXT: Carlos Frias (0-0, 3.91) will face Jorge De La Rosa (13-11, 4.28) and the Rockies at Coors Field on Wednesday at 12 p.m. PT. On the air: SportsNet LA. Radio: 570.
