Authorities in Pennsylvania believe they may have tracked down and exchanged gunfire with the man accused of fatally shooting a state trooper in an ambush outside a police barracks a week ago.
Eric Matthew Frein, 31, is suspected of using a .308-caliber rifle last week to gun down Cpl. Bryon Dickson and seriously wound Trooper Alex T. Douglass about 10:50 p.m. on Sept. 12, authorities said.
Frein, described by authorities as a survivalist, may be hiding out near his family's home in Canadensis, Pa., the Morning Call reports.
Authorities told CNN they believed the person they exchanged gunfire with on Friday was Frein.
After the initial report of shots fired, authorities issued a warning urging all residents of Barrett and Price townships to stay inside and "shelter in place," the Morning Call reported. Frein has an extensive shooting background and a grudge against law enforcement, officials have said.
Both townships are in the area of Frein's home in Canadensis, in the Poconos.
The FBI has placed Frein on its 10 most-wanted list and is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
As of 10 p.m. Pacific time, there was no update from authorities about the situation since the initial reports of gunfire.
