KEY MOMENT: After giving up a one-out single to Alejandro De Aza in the ninth, Angels reliever Mike Morin shattered Conor Gillaspie's bat with an outside fastball, but Gillaspie got enough of the pitch to ground a single to right, sending De Aza to third. Pinch-hitter Leury Garcia, who struck out against Morin with runners on first and third to end the sixth inning in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, lined a game-winning single to left.
AT THE PLATE: The Angels managed four singles through six innings off White Sox left-hander John Danks, but David Freese hit a solo homer to right in the seventh, and Josh Hamilton tied it with a two-out solo shot in the eighth. Albert Pujols thought he crushed a homer in the eighth, but the wind and rain on a chilly 57-degree night knocked the ball down, and center fielder Adam Eaton made the catch on the warning track.
ON THE MOUND: Six days after he gave up seven runs and walked five in three innings of a triple-A start, Tyler Skaggs was superb, allowing two runs and five hits in 72/3 innings and striking out six. "It was rhythm and tempo," Skaggs said. "I was kind of embarrassed after my rehab outing. Walking five and giving up that many runs in a triple-A game wears on you a bit, so I wanted to show everyone I'm still the same pitcher I was."
ON SECOND THOUGHT: Skaggs, who missed four weeks because of a right hamstring strain, was pulled after throwing 87 pitches. He said he "easily" could have continued, but Manager Mike Scioscia said the left-hander was on a pitch count in his first start off the disabled list, and he "didn't want him up in the 95- to 100-pitch range."
EXTRA BASES: Hamilton leaped high above the wall in left to rob Gordon Beckham of a homer in the first. … Mike Trout was named American League player of the month for June after hitting .361 with seven homers, 21 runs batted in and 20 runs in the month. … The Angels, according to Baseball America, signed Johan Sala, a 16-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic, for $300,000.
