Washington Nationals All-Star pitcher Jordan Zimmermann leaves game early

Washington Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmerman abruptly left his start against the Philadelphia Phillies in the fourth inning Friday night because of a right biceps injury.

Zimmerman (6-5), scheduled to participate in his second straight All-Star game Tuesday, called the Nationals training staff out after throwing a pitch to Cameron Rupp with one out in the fourth. He showed no obvious discomfort, but left the mound after a short discussion with the training staff and Washington Manager Matt Williams. Zimmermann will be evaluated further on Saturday. He isn't expected to pitch Tuesday, according to Williams.

In other All-Star-related news, Major League Baseball announced that Ian Kinsler will replace teammate Victor Martinez on the American League's All-Star roster, and Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero will take the place of injured St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina. Jonathan Lucroy of the Milwaukee Brewers will be the NL's starting catcher.

Etc.

Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro, who had been out because of a lower back strain, was activated from the disabled list and will make his first start of the season on Saturday.

Houston Astros rookie outfielder George Springer was a late scratch from the lineup for Friday's game against the Boston Red Sox because of right knee discomfort.

The Arizona Diamondbacks activated outfielder Mark Trumbo from the disabled list. He had been sidelined because of a stress fracture in his left foot since April 21.

The New York Yankees obtained left-handed pitcher Jeff Francis from the Oakland Athletics for a player to be named and cash.

The San Diego Padres said they have interviewed Kim Ng for their vacant general manager job.

Seattle Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders was placed on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a grade two strain of his left oblique muscle on a check swing.

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right ankle. Orioles Manager Buck Showalter said that the pitcher twisted his ankle in a parking lot a couple days ago.
