KEY MOMENT: With the game scoreless, Dee Gordon singled to left field with one out and promptly stole second base. Carl Crawford drew a walk, which brought up Yasiel Puig, who singled to left-center field to drive in Gordon.
ON THE MOUND: Five days earlier, Hyun-Jin Ryu made one of the worst starts of his career, giving up seven runs and 10 hits in 21/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers. Ryu responded with six spectacular innings Sunday, striking out 10 and walking none. Ryu gave up only two hits. "I think he has a lot of pride," catcher A.J. Ellis said. "He takes a lot of pride in bouncing back."
AT THE PLATE: Padres starter Tyson Ross limited the Dodgers to a run, six hits and a walk over seven innings. Ross is 1-6 over his last eight starts despite a 2.83 earned-run average over that span. Puig was two for four with a double. Puig will go to his first All-Star game batting .309 with 12 home runs and 52 runs batted in. Gordon, who will take part in his first All-Star game, stole his National League-leading 43rd base. Juan Uribe had two hits. Crawford started his first game since May 27 and was one for three with a walk.
ROSTER MOVE: Right-hander Pedro Baez was optioned to triple-A Albuquerque. Baez, a 26-year-old rookie, was in the major leagues for the second time this season. He pitched only once in his more recent promotion, tossing a scoreless inning in Detroit on Tuesday. The Dodgers won't replace Baez on the active roster until they resume play Friday.
MISCELLANEOUS: The Dodgers entered the All-Star break with the best record in the NL for the first time since 2009. … They won consecutive 1-0 games for the first time since June 8-9, 2011, also against the Padres.
