The governor of South Dakota deployed 100 members of the National Guard on Wednesday night after a tornado ripped through the small town of Wessington Springs.
The Red Cross is also responding, Gov. Dennis Daugaard reported on his Twitter account.
The tornado hit the town in Jerauld County just before 8 p.m., the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported.
Some homes and businesses were severely damaged, but no major injuries had been reported as of 9:30 p.m., according to Daugaard.
An emergency shelter was set up for those displaced from their homes.
Power has been shut off in the town. Emergency crews are searching through debris for survivors and requesting everyone else stay out of the area.
The destruction Wednesday in South Dakota was the most recent in a rash of tornadoes that have hit the Midwest this week.
Two people were killed and 15 injured when two massive tornadoes tore through the farming village of Pilger, Neb. Monday afternoon.Severe weather struck the area about 100 miles northwest of Omaha forcing the 350 residents to evacuate. The twisters laid waste to almost every structure in their path.Multiple tornadoes have also been reported in Colorado.
