BEIJING — "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" took in a strong $10 million on its first day in China, opening on the tail end of a three-day holiday that saw local movies clean up at the box office.
The Spidey sequel, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, premiered Sunday — technically a work day on the mainland because of a calendar quirk that gave many people Thursday, Friday and Saturday off for the May 1 holiday. Imported films often are restricted from opening during such peak moviegoing times.
For the seven days ending Sunday, the nostalgic domestic production "My Old Classmate" grabbed the No. 1 spot for the second week in a row, figures from industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway showed. The campus romance from director Frant Guo has now brought in nearly $53 million.
"The Great Hypnotist," a mystery-thriller from Taiwan-born director Leste Chen that opened Tuesday, sold nearly $23 million worth of tickets, earning the No. 2 spot, Artisan said. "Iceman," another local production, came in third with $10.6 million.
Garfield, Stone, Jamie Foxx and director Marc Webb came to Beijing in March to tout "Spider-Man," and its opening-day haul was enough to put it at No. 4 for the week. It was followed by fellow Marvel property "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which has had a stellar run on the mainland. "Captain" brought in another $7.6 million, bringing its total take to nearly $115.8 million.
