There are going to be some ugly ones. That's understood. Play 162 games a season and you're going to take part in a few you hope mom wasn't watching.
It felt like the Dodgers got enough ugly in their 13-3 loss to the Marlins on a sweaty Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium to fill their yearly quota.
It certainly wasn't left-hander Paul Maholm's night, but then it really wasn't a game to remember for most anyone in blue.
It was bury-the-head-under-the-pillow ugly, and naturally it happened at home. The Dodgers are now 9-13 at home and 13-7 on the road. Good news, they're now off to start a nine-game road trip!
The Dodgers watched the struggling Marlins score six times in the second, and were so fascinated by the experience, they watched them do it again in the fourth.
All this was going on while the Dodgers couldn't get a thing going against Anthony DeSclafani, who was only making his major-league debut as the emergency call-up after ace Jose Fernandez was placed on the disabled list.
All this for a Marlins team that was on a five-game losing streak.
There was only one error awarded in that disastrous second inning -- Dee Gordon unable to come up with a high bouncer -- but there was also Carl Crawford misjudging a line drive, Yasiel Puig overrunning a basehit and Giancarlo Stanton scoring from second on little tapper up the third-base line when no one covered home.
Not that the Marlins didn't earn some runs. They also had three homers -- a pair of two-run home runs from Ed Lucas and Reed Johnson, and a three-run shot from Jeff Mathis.
Maholm began the night 1-3 with a 4.76 ERA as a starter and then saw his numbers swell in the wrong direction. He lasted 3 2/3 innings and Manager Don Mattingly may have left him in longer than desired just because the game went so quickly out of hand. Maholm allowed 10 runs (five earned) on 11 hits and three walks.
The Dodgers were down 12-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Juan Uribe, who had not played since Thursday because of a sore hamstring, pinch hit and doubled. Puig followed with a run-scoring double to increase his hitting streak to 14 games.
Crawford added a solo home run in the sixth, Andre Ethier singled in one in the eighth, and that was about it for anything resembling good news for the Dodgers.
DeSclafani went six innings, holding the Dodgers to the two runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out seven. Not bad for someone just called up from double-A Jacksonville.
The Marlins ended their little night with 17 hits.
And that's without getting one in the ninth against ... catcher Drew Butera. Yep, that kinda ugly. Making his second career relief appearance, he retired the side in order. Including a strikeout of outfielder Marcell Ozuna on a 94 mph fastball.
